Sweaters & Spreadsheets

Sweater design involves math. A lot of math. Which is exactly what spreadsheets excel at. (See what I did there?)  We'll start by reviewing some of the math we use to draft a sweater pattern.

Then we'll move those formulas to an Excel or Google Sheet spreadsheet that will do the calculations.

You'll create your own high-powered "calculator" that will enable you to grade for multiple sizes at once, double-check your calculations, convert measurements to metrics, automatically round numbers, and more. Along the way, there will be plenty of discussion about the mechanics of sweaters and sweater shaping.

This class is for designers, tech editors, and anybody who wants to design a knitted or crocheted sweater for one or more sizes.

Class meets two hours weekly for four weeks, with two additional 30-minute optional office hours sessions. Classes will be recorded and made available to registered students for a limited time.

Please note that this series of classes will also be recorded and made available for purchase. You will have the option of remaining anonymous and off-camera throughout; details to be provided in the first class session.

Class minimum is 4 students; if class doesn't meet the minimum you'll have a choice of credit or refund.

Dates: November 7, 14, 21 and 28, 2023; 7:00-9:00 p.m. Eastern

Office Hours: November 5 and 12; 5:30-6:00 p.m. Eastern

Thanks for your interest! I can't wait to meet you!

Excellent focus on getting the most out of your software tools

If you're a designer, even just for yourself, don't hesitate to sign up for Edie's spreadsheets class. Her systematic approach and clear explanations will get you up to speed quickly, and her tips for programs like Excel are invaluable. Note that it's not a class about grading sizes. Instead, Edie focuses on efficiently and accurately creating pattern instructions for both knitting and crochet. I felt that I knew the basics of designing and sizing, but I really learned a lot!
