Math for Knitters

Do you have math anxiety when it comes to knitting?

Does your comfort level with math hover somewhere around the 4th-grade level?

Do you ALWAYS need a calculator? (Yep, me too.)

Do you wish you knew ahead of time if you have enough yarn to make a specific sweater?

Do you every wonder where all those pattern numbers come from, anyway?

This class is for you! I'll take the mystery out of those pesky math calculations you have to do when designing or altering a project. Math-phobics are welcome, and I won't call on you in class! While drafting a basic sweater, we will calculate yarn amounts, figure rates of increase/decrease across a single row, how to shape V-necks and sleeves, and how to deal with stitch multiples and center designs on a project.

You’ll learn how a swatch can tell you much more than what your gauge is, and what happens when your gauge is not on target. (We will NOT cover sleeve cap shaping.)

When: Thursday, March 14, 2024; 7:00-9:00 p.m. Eastern Time

Where: Zoom

What: 2-hour live online class with Edie Eckman

Class will be recorded and made available to registered students for at least a month after class.

We'll work on real-life problems together. You can take notes, just as you would in an in-person classroom. You can ask me questions, just as you would in an in-person classroom.

Here are just a few of the questions we'll answer:

How many stitches do you need across a row?

Why is gauge so important?

What happens if you can't get gauge?

How much yarn do I need for my project?

What are stitch multiples and how do I calculate them?

How do I space increases or decreases evenly across a single row or round?

How do I space increases or decreases evenly along a length?

This is the foundational knowledge you need for the next steps in adapting patterns or designing your own projects.

Requirements: Access to a computer and a good internet connection are necessary. You'll need a pencil, calculator, and paper for taking notes and working word problems.

Details: When you register, you will receive a receipt that includes a downloadable pdf with instructions on how to access the class at the appropriate time.

No refunds; if class minimum of 4 students per session is not met a week before class, you will receive a credit for a future class.
